Pound £3,750 Historic 4-4-0 5" LIVE STEAM LOCO Ludlow

Published date: January 21, 2020
  • Location: Ludlow, Shropshire, United Kingdom

A Historic 5 inch Gauge 4-4-0 Steam Locomotive, made to order circa 1910, believed to have been manufacturered by Bassett Lowke. It was acquired from the original family owners by my father in the early 1990s.

It was originally used on a garden track at a villa in Sutton Coldfield which overlooked the famous Sutton Park miniature railway which I understand was an early construction by Bassett Lowke. The family told my father that they believed the locomotive was running on their garden track in 1910, which must confirm its date as Sutton Park was the second miniature railway constructed by Bassett Lowke in 1908 and undoubtedly influenced them to have their own garden version, albeit of smaller gauge. Having said that, a date of 1904 was also mentioned by the family (perhaps the 5" railway came first?).

The engine is a substantial machine, would have been powerful with large outside cylinders, and superheated too. However please understand that it would require restoration to return it to steaming condition or would be ideal to keep in its present condition for display as a genuine period model which has never been on the market.

Approx sizes: Total Length 54.5 inches. Engine chassis L 32.5 x W 9 inches. Tender L 21.5 x W 9 inches. Max Height to chimney top 16 inches.

The motion and wheels are completely free turning , including those of the tender which is in good condition. A detachable cab and wheel splasher covering is missing, and could not be located when the engine was purchased. However the backhead and cab interior is now fully on view with the original fittings including steam turret, regulator, reversing/cut off ratchet lever, brake lever, water gauge etc, ideal for both a static exhibit or returned to steaming condition, where it must be of great interest when seen on the track. Please understand however that for steam use a new boiler and firebox would be required, copying the present original, which it's interesting to note was for superheated steam.
